ACL Tear Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the main ligament stopping the shin bone sliding forward and twisting under the thigh bone. Tears usually happen in sport during a pivot or awkward landing. Rehab is long, and it's what determines whether you get back to what you love.
How it happens
Most ACL tears are non-contact: a sudden change of direction, a landing with the knee collapsing inward, or stopping sharply. Many people hear or feel a pop, and the knee swells within hours. Football, basketball, badminton and kabaddi are common culprits in our clinic.
Surgery or not?
ACL reconstruction is common for people returning to pivoting sports. But not everyone needs it. Some people, especially those who don't play pivoting sport, do well with structured rehab alone. The decision depends on your goals, knee stability, other injuries (like meniscal tears) and age. It's worth discussing properly with your surgeon.
Prehab before surgery
Going into surgery with little swelling, full straightening and good quadriceps activation leads to better outcomes afterwards. A few weeks of prehab is time well spent.
Rehabilitation after reconstruction
Early goals are controlling swelling, regaining full straightening, activating the quadriceps and walking without crutches. Over the next months we progress strength training, balance, then jogging (often around three months), jumping and agility work.
Return to sport is guided by testing, not just time. Strength symmetry between legs, hop tests and movement quality are assessed. Research suggests that returning to pivoting sport before about nine months after surgery increases re-injury risk. That timeline can be frustrating, but it's based on how grafts mature.
Exercises often used for ACL Tear
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
