Rehabilitation Exercises

Parkinson's Exercise Program

Regular exercise is one of the most useful things people with Parkinson's disease can do. A programme combining big, deliberate movements, walking with cues, balance and strength helps mobility, posture and confidence.

What it does

Exercise may improve walking, balance and daily function in Parkinson's. Large-amplitude movement training counteracts the small, slow movements typical of the condition.

You will often see it in our programmes for Parkinson's disease, and it features in our neuro physiotherapy programmes.

How to do it

  1. Warm up with big arm and leg movements.
  2. Walking with large steps and rhythmic cues.
  3. Balance training: stepping, turning, reaching.
  4. Strength: sit to stand, squats, band work.
  5. Posture: thoracic extension and chest stretches.

How much

Most days of the week, with a mix of aerobic, strength and balance work.

Stop and check with us if

  • Falls increase or freezing episodes become more frequent.
