Elbow, Wrist and Hand Exercises

Wrist Flexor Stretch

The wrist flexor stretch lengthens the muscles on the palm side of the forearm, which attach at the inner elbow. It helps golfer's elbow, forearm strain and stiffness after wrist immobilisation.

What it does

The flexors work hard in gripping, lifting and racket sports. Stretching restores length and eases tension at the inner elbow.

It is a regular part of rehab plans for Golfer's elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome and wrist fracture, and it features in our joint pain physiotherapy programmes.

How to do it

  1. Hold your arm straight in front with the palm facing up.
  2. Bend the wrist back so the fingers point to the floor.
  3. Use the other hand to gently pull the fingers back towards you.
  4. Hold 20 to 30 seconds.

How much

3 holds, 2 to 3 times a day.

Common mistakes

  • Bending the elbow, which reduces the stretch.

Stop and check with us if

  • Tingling develops in the little and ring fingers. It may be ulnar nerve irritation.

Medical note

These instructions are general guidance, not a personal prescription. If you have a recent injury or surgery, a diagnosed condition, or symptoms such as numbness, weakness or dizziness, get assessed before starting. Stop and seek advice if pain increases sharply or you feel unwell.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I feel it in my fingers?
Some flexor muscles cross the fingers, so the stretch reaches them.
Does this help carpal tunnel?
Mild stretching may help some people. Avoid it if it increases tingling.
