Rehabilitation Exercises

Joint Replacement Rehabilitation Exercises

Rehabilitation after any joint replacement follows the same principles: protect the healing tissues, restore range, rebuild strength and return to daily activities. The details differ by joint and surgical approach.

What it does

The surgery replaces the worn surfaces; rehabilitation makes the joint work well.

Our physiotherapists use it most often for total knee replacement, total hip replacement and shoulder arthropathy, and it features in our post-surgical rehabilitation programmes.

How to do it

  1. Early circulation and breathing exercises.
  2. Range of motion within your surgeon's limits.
  3. Muscle activation and progressive strengthening.
  4. Walking or arm function training.
  5. Return to daily activities and hobbies.

How much

Several short sessions a day early on, then daily programmes over months.

Stop and check with us if

  • Increasing pain, redness, fever, wound discharge or calf swelling.
