Shoulder and Arm Fractures Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
Fractures around the shoulder and upper arm, including the collarbone, the top of the humerus and the shaft of the humerus, all share one challenge: the shoulder stiffens quickly when it isn't moving. Rehab balances protecting the fracture with preventing that stiffness.
Common fracture types
Collarbone fractures are frequent in cyclists and people who fall on an outstretched hand. Proximal humerus fractures (the top of the upper arm bone) are especially common in older women after a fall, often linked to osteoporosis. Humeral shaft fractures run through the middle of the arm and occasionally injure the radial nerve, causing wrist drop.
Many are treated in a sling or brace. Displaced or complex fractures may need plates, nails or, in older adults with severe proximal humerus fractures, shoulder replacement.
The stiffness problem
The shoulder joint capsule tightens remarkably quickly when the arm is held still. That's why surgeons often allow gentle movement early, sometimes within the first week or two, even when the bone is far from healed. Pendulum exercises, elbow and hand movement, and assisted shoulder motion within safe limits are typical early tasks.
Rehab through healing
Most upper limb fractures unite in six to twelve weeks. As healing progresses and your orthopedic team clears it, we move from assisted to active movement, then strengthening. The rotator cuff, deltoid and shoulder blade muscles have usually weakened and need structured rebuilding.
For older adults, rehab also looks at balance and falls prevention, because the fall that caused the fracture is often a warning sign. Fracture healing and bone health go together, so we encourage a conversation with your doctor about bone density if it hasn't happened.
Exercises often used for Shoulder and Arm Fractures
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

Why is my hand swollen?
Will I get full movement back?
What are Shoulder and Arm Fractures?
Shoulder and arm fractures include breaks of the collarbone, upper arm (humerus) and shoulder blade.
What causes Shoulder and Arm Fractures?
Common causes include falls onto the shoulder or outstretched hand, sports and road accidents, and weakened bone from osteoporosis.
What are the common symptoms of Shoulder and Arm Fractures?
Common symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, deformity and inability to move the arm.
How are Shoulder and Arm Fractures diagnosed?
It is usually diagnosed with X-rays, and CT for complex fractures.
Can physiotherapy help with Shoulder and Arm Fractures?
Yes. Physiotherapy prevents stiffness and restores strength once the fracture allows. Our post-surgical rehabilitation programme is built around this.
What are the goals of physiotherapy for Shoulder and Arm Fractures?
To regain shoulder range, rebuild strength and return to daily activities.
What treatments may be used for Shoulder and Arm Fractures?
Treatment usually combines exercises such as pendulum exercise, shoulder flexion and shoulder extension with interferential therapy (IFT), heat therapy (thermotherapy) and TENS therapy. Hands-on treatment, education and activity advice are added as needed, and the plan changes as you progress.
