Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
Carpal tunnel syndrome is compression of the median nerve as it passes through a narrow tunnel at the wrist. It causes tingling, numbness and sometimes weakness in the thumb, index and middle fingers, and it's often worst at night.
Why the nerve gets squeezed
The carpal tunnel is formed by the wrist bones underneath and a tough ligament across the top. Nine tendons and the median nerve share that space. Anything that increases pressure inside it (swelling of the tendon linings, fluid retention in pregnancy, thyroid problems, diabetes, wrist arthritis, or long periods with the wrist bent) can compress the nerve.
Classic symptoms
Tingling or pins and needles in the thumb, index, middle and half of the ring finger. Waking at night with a numb hand and shaking it to get feeling back is very typical. Over time, fine tasks like buttoning or picking up coins get harder, and the muscle at the base of the thumb can waste.
Neck problems can mimic carpal tunnel, so we check the cervical spine too. Nerve conduction studies confirm the diagnosis and severity when needed.
Conservative treatment
Mild to moderate cases often improve with a night splint that keeps the wrist in neutral, since many people sleep with their wrists curled. Nerve and tendon gliding exercises, reducing sustained wrist bending at work, and managing contributing medical conditions all help.
Ultrasound therapy and laser have some evidence of short-term benefit. Steroid injections can provide relief for weeks to months.
After surgery
If symptoms are severe, constant, or there's muscle wasting, carpal tunnel release surgery is usually recommended. Recovery involves scar management, gentle movement and gradual strengthening. Most people return to light work in a few weeks, and grip strength continues to improve over several months.
Exercises often used for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
