Interferential Therapy (IFT) in Indirapuram

Interferential therapy uses two medium-frequency currents that cross inside the tissue to produce a low-frequency effect deeper than a standard TENS unit reaches. It's a pain-relief tool. It works best as a way to calm symptoms enough for you to do the treatment that actually changes things.

How IFT works

Four electrodes are placed around the painful area in a crossing pattern. Two currents of slightly different frequencies meet in the tissue, and where they overlap they produce a beat frequency that stimulates sensory nerves. The skin feels a comfortable tingling rather than the sharper sensation of low-frequency current.

The main effect is on pain signalling. Stimulating large sensory nerve fibres reduces how strongly pain messages get through at the spinal cord, and some settings may encourage the body's own pain-relieving chemicals. Relief usually lasts from a few hours to a day.

What it's used for

IFT is most useful when pain is high enough to stop you exercising or moving normally. Acute back and neck pain, flare-ups of arthritis, and painful tendons are typical. It gives a window of reduced pain in which exercise and mobility work can be done more comfortably.

It isn't a cure for structural problems, and research doesn't support using it on its own for long-term results. We use it for a limited number of sessions and reduce it as your active programme takes over.

Who shouldn't have IFT

We don't use it over a pregnant abdomen or pelvis, near a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, over active cancer, over areas of deep vein thrombosis, over broken or infected skin, or where sensation is significantly reduced. Tell us about any implants or medical conditions before treatment.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

Does IFT hurt?
No. It feels like a strong but comfortable tingling or buzzing. The intensity is adjusted to your comfort.
How long is a session?
Usually 10 to 20 minutes, as part of a longer session that includes exercise or manual therapy.
Is IFT better than TENS?
It reaches deeper and is more comfortable at higher intensities, but for pain relief the two are broadly similar. TENS has the advantage of being usable at home.
