LCL Injury Physiotherapy in Indirapuram

The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) sits on the outer side of the knee and resists the knee bowing outward. Isolated LCL injuries are uncommon. More often it's injured with other structures at the back and outer corner of the knee.

How it happens

A blow to the inside of the knee that pushes it outward, or a hyperextension and twisting injury, can damage the LCL. Because the outer corner of the knee includes several structures working together, a significant LCL injury raises suspicion of a posterolateral corner injury, which can cause ongoing instability if missed.

The common peroneal nerve runs close by, so we check for foot weakness or numbness, which can indicate nerve involvement.

Symptoms

Pain and tenderness on the outer side of the knee, swelling, and sometimes a feeling of the knee giving way outward, especially when standing on the leg with the knee straight.

Rehabilitation

Mild isolated sprains are treated with protection, early movement, and progressive strengthening and balance work, returning to sport over weeks. More serious or combined injuries may need surgery, and rehab after that is longer and more structured.

Because outer knee injuries can be complex, a proper assessment and sometimes imaging are worth getting early.

Exercises often used for LCL Injury

These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

Is LCL injury as common as MCL injury?
No. Isolated LCL injuries are less common.
Why check my foot?
The peroneal nerve runs near the LCL and can be injured, causing foot drop.
Do LCL injuries need surgery?
