Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation for Leprosy (Hansen's Disease)

Leprosy, or Hansen's disease, is a curable infection that can damage nerves in the hands, feet and face. Medication cures the infection. Physiotherapy and self-care help prevent and manage the disability that nerve damage can cause.

Why nerve care matters

Leprosy is fully curable with multidrug therapy, available free through government programmes in India. The main long-term concern is nerve damage. Affected nerves can cause loss of sensation, muscle weakness and deformities such as claw hand, foot drop and difficulty closing the eye.

Loss of sensation means injuries like burns, cuts and blisters may go unnoticed, leading to wounds and infections.

Role of physiotherapy

We assess nerve function regularly, including muscle strength and sensation, to spot changes early. Exercises maintain strength and joint mobility. Splints help prevent contractures and support weak hands or feet. Stretching keeps fingers and joints flexible.

Self-care is central

Daily self-care routines protect insensitive hands and feet: soaking and oiling dry skin, checking for injuries, using protective gloves and footwear, and resting the limb when wounds occur. We teach and reinforce these routines, since they make the biggest difference over time.

Stigma around leprosy remains. It's important to know that people on treatment quickly become non-infectious and can live, work and receive care normally.

Exercises often used for Leprosy

These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

Is leprosy curable?
Yes. Multidrug therapy cures the infection.
Can nerve damage be reversed?
Early treatment may improve some nerve function. Established damage is often permanent, but disability can be prevented.
