Physiotherapy After Total Knee Replacement in Indirapuram
A total knee replacement can transform life for someone with severe knee arthritis. But the new joint only works as well as the rehab behind it. The first six weeks, in particular, decide how much bend and straightening you end up with.
Why the early weeks matter most
Scar tissue forms quickly after knee replacement. If the knee isn't moved regularly in the first six weeks, it can stiffen in a way that's hard to reverse later. Two targets guide early rehab: getting the knee fully straight (important for walking without a limp) and bending to at least around 90 degrees by a few weeks, progressing toward 110 degrees or more (needed for stairs, chairs and getting in and out of cars).
Swelling, pain and fatigue are all normal early on. Pain relief taken before exercise helps you work effectively.
What rehab involves
Early sessions focus on range of motion, quadriceps activation, walking with a frame or crutches, and practical tasks like getting in and out of bed and climbing stairs. Ice and compression manage swelling.
Over the following weeks, we progress strength, balance and walking without aids. Stairs, standing up from lower chairs and walking longer distances come next.
Home physiotherapy
Many patients in Indirapuram and nearby areas start rehab at home. It's practical in the first weeks when travel is difficult, and training on your own stairs and furniture makes sense. We transition to clinic sessions when appropriate.
Longer-term outcomes
Most people walk without aids by six to twelve weeks. Strength and comfort continue improving for up to a year. Walking, cycling and swimming are encouraged long-term.
Exercises often used for Total Knee Replacement
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
