Ankle Fracture Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
Ankle fractures range from a simple crack in one bone to complex breaks needing plates and screws. Whatever the treatment, rehab afterwards focuses on the same things: getting the ankle moving again, walking normally and rebuilding balance.
Types and treatment
Most ankle fractures involve the ends of the fibula, tibia or both. Stable fractures are often treated in a boot or cast. Unstable fractures, where the joint alignment is at risk, usually need surgery. Weight bearing is allowed at different times depending on the fracture and fixation.
After immobilisation
When the boot or cast comes off, the ankle is typically stiff, swollen and weak. Walking may feel odd, and confidence is often low. Swelling can persist for months, especially at the end of the day.
Rehabilitation
We restore ankle bending and pointing, since limited upward bending affects walking and stairs. Calf strength is often dramatically reduced and needs dedicated work. Balance training is vital because the ankle's position sense is affected. Gait retraining helps people stop limping.
Return to running, sport or heavy work follows as strength and balance return. Most people get back to normal daily activity within three to four months, with sport taking longer.
Exercises often used for Ankle Fracture
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
