Parkinson's Disease Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
Parkinson's disease affects movement: it slows it down, makes it smaller and stiffer, and affects balance. Medication helps. Regular, targeted exercise is one of the most powerful additions, and it helps at every stage.
How Parkinson's affects movement
Reduced dopamine in the brain leads to slowness (bradykinesia), stiffness (rigidity), tremor and balance problems. Steps get shorter and feet shuffle. Turning becomes difficult. Some people experience freezing, where feet feel stuck to the floor, especially in doorways or crowded places.
Why exercise matters
Research consistently shows that exercise improves walking, balance, strength and quality of life in Parkinson's. Some studies suggest intense aerobic exercise may help slow symptom progression, though that's still being researched. What's clear is that regular exercise helps people function better for longer.
What therapy involves
Big, deliberate movements counter the tendency for movements to shrink. Walking practice uses cues, like stepping to a rhythm or over lines on the floor, which can reduce freezing. Balance training, strength work, and practising turning and getting up from chairs and the floor are all included. Aerobic exercise like cycling or brisk walking is encouraged.
Falls prevention
Falls are a major risk in Parkinson's. We assess home safety, teach strategies for turning and getting up after a fall, and work on balance. Timing exercise when medication is working well can improve performance.
Exercises often used for Parkinson's Disease
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
