Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome Physiotherapy in Indirapuram

Tarsal tunnel syndrome is compression of the tibial nerve as it passes behind the inner ankle bone. It causes burning, tingling or numbness in the sole of the foot, sometimes called the foot's version of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Causes

The tarsal tunnel is a narrow space on the inside of the ankle. Flat feet that roll inward, swelling after ankle injuries, varicose veins, cysts, and conditions like diabetes can all increase pressure on the nerve.

Symptoms

Burning, tingling, shooting pain or numbness on the sole and sometimes the heel, often worse with standing and walking. Symptoms may be worse at night. Tapping over the nerve behind the inner ankle can reproduce them.

We check the lower back too, because nerve root problems from the spine can cause similar symptoms. Diabetic neuropathy is another possibility, particularly if both feet are affected.

Treatment

Reducing strain on the nerve is key. Arch support and supportive footwear help if flat feet contribute. Nerve gliding exercises and calf and foot strengthening may help. Ultrasound or TENS can ease discomfort.

Persistent cases may need nerve conduction testing and specialist input. Surgery is considered when there's a clear compressing structure or severe symptoms.

Exercises often used for Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

Is tarsal tunnel syndrome common?
It's less common than carpal tunnel syndrome and often under-recognised.
Can flat feet cause it?
Yes. Feet that roll inward can increase tension on the nerve.
Could it be diabetic neuropathy?
Similar symptoms occur in diabetic neuropathy, especially if both feet are affected. Assessment helps distinguish them.
