Exercise guide

Breathing and Respiratory Exercises

Breathing exercises improve lung expansion, clear secretions and ease breathlessness. They are used after surgery, in asthma and chronic lung disease, and in neuromuscular conditions that weaken the breathing muscles.

How to use these exercises

Diaphragmatic and pursed lip breathing help control breathlessness. Deep breathing and incentive spirometry help lung expansion after surgery. Respiratory muscle training should be prescribed and dosed individually.

When to see a physiotherapist first

Seek medical care for worsening breathlessness, chest pain, fever or coughing blood.

Medical note

These instructions are general guidance, not a personal prescription. If you have a recent injury or surgery, a diagnosed condition, or symptoms such as numbness, weakness or dizziness, get assessed before starting. Stop and seek advice if pain increases sharply or you feel unwell.

Frequently asked questions
