Neurological Rehabilitation Exercises
Motor Control Exercises
Motor control exercises focus on the quality of movement: switching on the right muscles at the right time. They are used after stroke and brain injury, in back pain rehab, and whenever movement has become clumsy or compensated.
What it does
Recovery depends on the brain relearning how to control movement. Specific, repeated practice drives that learning.
Our physiotherapists use it most often for stroke, cerebral palsy and multiple sclerosis, and it features in our neuro physiotherapy programmes.
How to do it
- Break a task into parts, such as reaching to a cup: shoulder lift, elbow straightening, hand opening.
- Practise each part slowly with correct form.
- Recombine into the full task.
- Use feedback such as mirrors, touch cues or video.
- Increase speed and complexity as control improves.
How much
Short, frequent sessions daily. High repetition is important.
Stop and check with us if
- Fatigue quickly makes movement worse. Rest and shorten sessions.
Medical note
These instructions are general guidance, not a personal prescription. If you have a recent injury or surgery, a diagnosed condition, or symptoms such as numbness, weakness or dizziness, get assessed before starting. Stop and seek advice if pain increases sharply or you feel unwell.
