Bell's Palsy / Facial Palsy Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
Bell's palsy is sudden weakness or paralysis on one side of the face, caused by inflammation of the facial nerve. It's frightening, but most people recover fully, often within weeks to a few months.
First, rule out a stroke
Facial drooping can also be a sign of stroke. If there's any arm or leg weakness, speech difficulty or confusion, call an ambulance. In Bell's palsy, the whole side of the face is usually affected, including the forehead. In a stroke, the forehead is often spared. A doctor should assess any sudden facial weakness promptly; early steroid treatment improves recovery in Bell's palsy.
Protecting the eye
If the eyelid doesn't close fully, the eye can dry and get damaged. Lubricating eye drops by day, ointment at night and taping the eye closed during sleep may be advised. This is important.
What physiotherapy does
In the early phase, gentle facial exercises done in front of a mirror help maintain awareness and movement. Strong, forceful exercises and chewing gum aren't recommended; they may encourage abnormal movement patterns.
As recovery progresses, we focus on controlled, symmetrical movements. If the nerve recovers imperfectly, synkinesis (where one movement triggers another, like the eye closing when smiling) can develop. Specific neuromuscular retraining helps manage this.
Electrical stimulation use is debated; we use it selectively.
Exercises
Exercises for Bell's Palsy / Facial Palsy are chosen individually after assessment. Our exercise guides explain the techniques we use most.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
