Torticollis Physiotherapy in Indirapuram

Congenital muscular torticollis is when a baby holds their head tilted to one side and turned toward the other, usually because a neck muscle is tight. It's common, and early physiotherapy is very effective.

Why it happens

The sternocleidomastoid muscle on one side of the neck is tight or shortened, possibly from positioning in the womb or during birth. Sometimes a small lump is felt in the muscle in the first weeks, which usually resolves.

Babies with torticollis often prefer turning their head one way, which can lead to a flattened area on the back of the head (plagiocephaly).

Treatment

Early treatment, ideally in the first few months, gives the best results. Gentle stretching exercises, taught to parents, are done several times a day. Positioning changes encourage turning to the less preferred side: placing toys, feeding and lying positions to that side.

Tummy time strengthens neck muscles and reduces pressure on the back of the head. Carrying positions can also help stretch the tight muscle.

Most babies improve within a few months. If not, a specialist review is arranged.

Other causes

Not all head tilts are muscular torticollis. Vision problems, spine abnormalities and other conditions can cause similar postures, so assessment is important.

Exercises often used for Torticollis

These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

Will torticollis go away on its own?
Some mild cases improve, but physiotherapy usually speeds recovery and prevents flat head.
Is stretching painful for my baby?
Gentle stretching may cause mild fussiness but shouldn't be painful. We'll teach you the right technique.
Can torticollis cause a flat head?
Yes. Positioning and tummy time help prevent it.
