Guillain-Barré Syndrome Physiotherapy in Indirapuram

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a condition where the immune system attacks the peripheral nerves, often after an infection. Weakness can spread quickly and needs hospital care. Most people recover, and rehab guides that recovery over months.

A medical emergency first

GBS often starts with tingling in the feet and hands, followed by weakness that spreads upward over days. If breathing or swallowing muscles are affected, it can be life-threatening. Anyone with rapidly spreading weakness needs urgent hospital assessment.

Recovery phases

After the acute phase, when weakness peaks, recovery usually begins. It can take weeks to months, and some people have lasting weakness or fatigue.

Rehabilitation

Early on, in hospital, therapy focuses on positioning, breathing exercises, maintaining joint range and preventing complications. As nerves recover, we gradually introduce strengthening, sitting and standing balance, and walking.

Overworking recovering muscles can cause fatigue and discomfort, so dosing is careful. Exercises are progressed as strength returns. Splints may help with foot drop or wrist weakness during recovery.

Rehab continues until you're back to walking, working and daily tasks, which often takes months. Fatigue management is an important part.

These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
