Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction Physiotherapy in Indirapuram

Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) is a weakening of the main tendon that supports the arch of the foot. As it fails, the arch gradually collapses, which is why it's the most common cause of flat feet developing in adulthood.

What the tendon does

The posterior tibial tendon runs behind the inner ankle bone and attaches under the arch. It holds the arch up and helps you rise onto your toes. When it becomes painful and weak, the arch starts to flatten and the heel may tilt outward.

It's most common in women over 40, and in people with obesity, diabetes or high blood pressure.

Symptoms

Pain and swelling along the inner ankle, fatigue in the arch after standing or walking, and a foot that looks flatter than before. Standing on tiptoe on that foot becomes difficult. Over time, pain may shift to the outer ankle as the foot changes shape.

Why early treatment matters

In early stages, the foot is flexible and the tendon can be strengthened. In later stages, the deformity becomes rigid and surgery may be needed. Acting early makes a big difference.

Treatment

A progressive tendon strengthening programme, arch-supporting insoles or orthotics, and supportive footwear form the core. Taping can provide short-term support. Activity modification and weight management help reduce load. Ultrasound may ease pain in early phases.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
