Sitting Balance Exercises
Sitting balance exercises help children learn to sit without support and catch themselves when they tip. Stable sitting frees the hands for play and is needed for feeding and learning.
What it does
Trunk strength and protective reactions develop through supported sitting practice.
Our physiotherapists use it most often for down syndrome, cerebral palsy and spina bifida, and it features in our pediatric physiotherapy programmes.
How to do it
- Sit the child on the floor with support at the hips.
- Offer toys in different directions to encourage reaching.
- Gently tip them slightly to encourage saving reactions with the hands.
- Progress to sitting on a small bench or therapy ball with support.
How much
Short, frequent play sessions.
Stop and check with us if
- Sitting unsupported hasn't developed by around 9 months.
Medical note
These instructions are general guidance, not a personal prescription. If you have a recent injury or surgery, a diagnosed condition, or symptoms such as numbness, weakness or dizziness, get assessed before starting. Stop and seek advice if pain increases sharply or you feel unwell.
