Pes Anserine Bursitis Physiotherapy in Indirapuram

Pes anserine bursitis causes pain on the inner side of the knee, just below the joint line, where three tendons from the thigh attach to the shin. It often accompanies knee osteoarthritis and is frequently missed because of it.

What and where

The pes anserinus is where the sartorius, gracilis and semitendinosus tendons join and attach to the inner shin, a few centimetres below the knee joint. Under them sits a bursa. Irritation of the bursa or the tendons causes local pain and tenderness.

It's common in people with knee osteoarthritis, particularly women, and in runners who increase mileage quickly. Knock knees, tight hamstrings and excess body weight can contribute.

How to tell it apart

The key feature is location. Arthritis pain is usually at the joint line or diffuse. Pes anserine pain sits slightly lower, on a point that's tender to press. Climbing stairs, getting out of a chair and crossing legs often aggravate it. Pain at night lying with knees together is also common.

Treatment

We reduce the load that's irritating the area and address contributing factors: hamstring and inner thigh strength and flexibility, hip control and, if relevant, running volume. A pillow between the knees at night helps. Ultrasound, IFT and taping provide short-term relief.

Because it often comes with knee arthritis, treating the arthritis with strengthening usually helps both. Most people improve over several weeks.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

Is this part of my knee arthritis?
It's a separate problem that commonly occurs alongside arthritis. Treating both usually gives better results.
Why does it hurt at night?
Knees resting together put pressure on the area. A pillow between the knees helps.
Will injections help?
They can help persistent cases, usually alongside exercise.
