Rehabilitation Exercises
Post Hip Replacement Exercises
Exercises after hip replacement restore strength around the new hip and a normal walking pattern. Depending on the surgical approach, certain positions may need to be avoided for several weeks.
What it does
Strong glutes and hip muscles stabilise the new joint and prevent limping.
You will often see it in our programmes for total hip replacement, hip osteoarthritis and hip fracture, and it features in our post-surgical rehabilitation programmes.
How to do it
- Early: ankle pumps, buttock squeezes, quad sets, heel slides within limits.
- Standing exercises: hip abduction, extension, mini squats holding on.
- Walking practice with an aid, stair training.
- Later: bridges, step ups, balance and walking distance.
- Follow precautions on bending, crossing legs and twisting.
How much
2 to 3 times a day early, then daily.
Stop and check with us if
- Sudden pain, a click with the leg looking shortened or turned, or calf swelling. Seek urgent help.
