Rehabilitation Exercises
ACL Rehabilitation Exercises
ACL rehabilitation restores knee movement, strength and control after an ACL tear or reconstruction. It takes around 9 to 12 months before a safe return to pivoting sport, and each stage has clear goals.
What it does
The knee needs full extension, strong quadriceps and hamstrings, and excellent control before returning to sport.
You will often see it in our programmes for ACL tear and meniscal injury, and it features in our sports physiotherapy programmes.
How to do it
- Phase 1: reduce swelling, regain full straightening, quad activation.
- Phase 2: full bend, normal walking, basic strengthening.
- Phase 3: progressive strength, balance, single-leg control.
- Phase 4: running, jumping and landing training.
- Phase 5: sport-specific drills and return-to-sport testing.
How much
Daily exercise with regular supervised sessions.
Stop and check with us if
- The knee gives way, swells after activity or locks.
