Infantile Hemiparesis Physiotherapy in Indirapuram

Infantile hemiparesis is weakness on one side of the body caused by an injury to the brain before, around or shortly after birth. Children often learn to use their stronger side for everything. Therapy encourages the weaker side to participate and develop.

What causes it

A stroke in the womb or around birth, bleeding in the brain in premature babies, or other early brain injuries can affect one side of the body. It's a form of hemiplegic cerebral palsy.

Parents often first notice that a baby favours one hand very early, before about 12 months (when hand preference usually hasn't developed yet), or keeps one hand fisted.

Why early therapy matters

Young brains are highly adaptable. Encouraging the weaker arm and leg to move and be used during this period can influence how motor pathways develop. Without encouragement, children tend to ignore the weaker side, which can lead to learned non-use.

Therapy approaches

Therapy is play-based and built into daily routines. We encourage reaching, grasping, crawling and standing using both sides. Constraint-induced approaches, where the stronger hand is gently restricted for short periods during play, can boost use of the weaker hand. Bimanual activities, like playing with large toys that need two hands, help too.

Stretching, positioning and sometimes splints prevent tightness. As the child grows, therapy supports walking, balance, fine motor skills and participation in school and play.

Exercises often used for Infantile Hemiparesis

These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

When should therapy start?
As early as possible. Early intervention can make a meaningful difference.
Will my child walk?
Most children with hemiparesis learn to walk, sometimes a little later than peers.
Is it the same as cerebral palsy?
Infantile hemiparesis is a type of cerebral palsy affecting one side of the body.
What is Infantile Hemiparesis?

Infantile hemiparesis is weakness on one side of the body in a baby or young child, often from a stroke around birth.

What causes Infantile Hemiparesis?

Common causes include stroke before or around birth, brain injury or developmental differences.

What are the common symptoms of Infantile Hemiparesis?

Common symptoms include favouring one hand very early, reduced movement on one side and delayed milestones.

How is Infantile Hemiparesis diagnosed?

It is usually diagnosed with paediatric neurological examination and brain imaging.

Can physiotherapy help with Infantile Hemiparesis?

Yes. Early, play-based therapy encourages use of the affected side. Our pediatric physiotherapy programme is built around this.

What are the goals of physiotherapy for Infantile Hemiparesis?

To improve movement and use of the weaker side and support development.

What treatments may be used for Infantile Hemiparesis?

Treatment usually combines exercises such as neurodevelopmental exercises, rolling exercises and crawling exercises with kinesio taping. Hands-on treatment, education and activity advice are added as needed, and the plan changes as you progress.
