Neurological Rehabilitation Exercises
Balance Training
Balance training combines standing, stepping, reaching and walking challenges in a structured programme. It is the most effective exercise approach for reducing falls in older adults and is essential in neurological conditions.
What it does
Balance depends on strength, vision, inner ear and sensation. Training challenges each system progressively.
Our physiotherapists use it most often for Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and stroke, and it features in our geriatric physiotherapy programmes.
How to do it
- Static balance: feet together, tandem stance, single leg stand.
- Dynamic balance: weight shifting, reaching, turning.
- Walking challenges: heel-to-toe, sideways, backwards, head turns.
- Add difficulty: eyes closed, soft surfaces, dual tasks like counting.
- Always have support within reach.
How much
At least 2 to 3 hours per week in total, spread over several sessions, as recommended for falls prevention.
Stop and check with us if
- You have repeated falls, dizziness or blackouts. These need medical assessment.
Medical note
These instructions are general guidance, not a personal prescription. If you have a recent injury or surgery, a diagnosed condition, or symptoms such as numbness, weakness or dizziness, get assessed before starting. Stop and seek advice if pain increases sharply or you feel unwell.
