Shoulder Arthropathy Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
Shoulder arthropathy is a broad term for damage to the shoulder joint itself, from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis or a long-standing rotator cuff tear. Treatment aims to keep you reaching, dressing and sleeping as comfortably as possible.
Types you'll hear about
Glenohumeral osteoarthritis is wear of the cartilage in the ball-and-socket joint. Inflammatory arthritis can damage the joint through a different process. Cuff tear arthropathy happens when a large rotator cuff tear has been present for years: without the cuff holding the ball down, it rides upward and wears the joint unevenly.
The distinction matters because it changes what the shoulder can do and which surgical options exist if they're ever needed.
What people notice
Deep aching in the shoulder, grinding or clicking, stiffness that makes reaching behind your back or overhead difficult, and night pain. In cuff tear arthropathy there's often marked weakness lifting the arm, even when pain isn't severe.
How physiotherapy helps
Joint damage can't be reversed, but pain and function often improve more than people expect. We work on the range of motion you still have, strengthen the muscles around the shoulder blade and whatever cuff remains, and train the front of the deltoid to help lift the arm in cuff-deficient shoulders.
Heat and TENS help with pain. Activity changes help too: bringing frequently used items down from high shelves, using a longer-handled brush, sleeping with a pillow under the arm.
After shoulder replacement
When pain becomes severe and function poor, total or reverse shoulder replacement is an option. Rehabilitation afterwards follows a staged protocol from your surgeon, beginning with protected movement and progressing to strengthening over three to six months. Reverse shoulder replacements in particular rely heavily on the deltoid, which we train specifically.
Exercises often used for Shoulder Arthropathy
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
