Senior Citizen Exercises
Fall Prevention Exercises
Fall prevention exercises combine leg strengthening and balance training. Programmes like these are among the most effective ways to reduce falls in older adults, especially when done regularly over months.
What it does
Falls often result from weak legs, poor balance and slow reactions. Targeted exercise improves all three.
You will often see it in our programmes for osteoporosis, Parkinson's disease and dementia, and it features in our geriatric physiotherapy programmes.
How to do it
- Sit to stand: 10 repetitions.
- Calf and toe raises holding a counter: 10 each.
- Single leg stand: 10 to 30 seconds each leg, holding on.
- Heel-to-toe standing and walking along the counter.
- Side steps along the counter.
- Make the home safer too: remove loose rugs, add night lights and grab rails.
How much
At least 3 times a week, 30 minutes a session, continued long term.
Stop and check with us if
- You've had a fall recently, feel dizzy or have blackouts. Get a medical review.
