Elbow, Wrist and Hand Exercises
Wrist Circles
Wrist circles move the wrist through all directions in a smooth loop. They warm up the wrist before typing, sport or strengthening work and ease the stiffness that follows immobilisation or long computer sessions.
What it does
Combining all wrist movements keeps the small joints moving and increases blood flow before activity.
You will often see it in our programmes for wrist fracture, carpal tunnel syndrome and de Quervain's tenosynovitis, and it features in our joint pain physiotherapy programmes.
How to do it
- Rest your forearm on a table or hold it in front of you.
- Make a loose fist or keep fingers relaxed.
- Draw slow, large circles with your hand, 10 in each direction.
- Keep the forearm still.
How much
10 circles each way, several times a day.
Common mistakes
- Moving the forearm instead of the wrist.
Stop and check with us if
- Clicking with pain or a clunk occurs on the little finger side of the wrist.
Medical note
These instructions are general guidance, not a personal prescription. If you have a recent injury or surgery, a diagnosed condition, or symptoms such as numbness, weakness or dizziness, get assessed before starting. Stop and seek advice if pain increases sharply or you feel unwell.
