Baastrup Syndrome Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
Baastrup syndrome, sometimes called kissing spine, happens when the bony bumps at the back of neighbouring vertebrae touch and rub. The pain is usually central, local and worse when you arch backward.
Why the bones start touching
The spinous processes are the bumps you can feel down the middle of your back. Normally there's a small gap between them. With disc height loss, an increased inward curve of the lower back, or repeated arching in sport, that gap can close. The bones then contact each other and the ligament between them gets pinched. Over time a small bursa can form there.
It's most common in older adults and in people with a pronounced lumbar curve. Gymnasts and dancers can develop it earlier.
Recognising it
The pain sits right in the middle of the lower back, directly over the spine, and is tender to press. Arching backward or standing for long periods makes it worse. Bending forward or sitting often feels better. There's usually no leg pain, which helps separate it from disc or nerve problems.
Physiotherapy approach
Treatment aims to reduce how much the lower back arches under load. Tight hip flexors pull the pelvis forward and increase that curve, so we stretch and mobilise them. Weak glutes and abdominals allow the pelvis to tip forward, so we strengthen them. Thoracic mobility helps too, because a stiff upper back makes people extend more through the lumbar spine.
Local ultrasound and IFT can ease pain in the early phase. We also coach standing posture and how to reach overhead without overarching. If pain persists despite this, your doctor may consider an injection into the affected space.
Exercises often used for Baastrup Syndrome
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
