Ankle Bone Spur Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
Ankle bone spurs are small bony growths, usually at the front of the ankle joint, that can pinch soft tissue when the ankle bends upward. This is called anterior ankle impingement, and it's common in footballers, dancers and people with past sprains.
Why spurs form
Repeated stress on the front of the ankle, from kicking, deep squatting, repeated sprains and landing, can cause the body to lay down extra bone at the joint edges. Many people have spurs without symptoms. They become a problem when they pinch soft tissue during movement.
Symptoms
Pain at the front of the ankle when bending it upward, as in squatting, climbing stairs, lunging or running uphill. Sometimes a visible or palpable bump. Reduced range of ankle bending compared with the other side.
Treatment
We improve ankle mobility where possible and look at how you move. Sometimes the problem is made worse by stiffness elsewhere, like in the big toe or hip, which forces the ankle into more bending. Calf and foot strength, footwear changes and activity modification help. Heel raises in shoes can reduce ankle bending temporarily.
Soft tissue work and ultrasound may ease irritation. If symptoms persist despite good rehab, keyhole surgery to remove the spur is an option, followed by several weeks of rehab.
Exercises often used for Ankle Bone Spur
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
