Rehabilitation Exercises
Post Fracture Exercises
After a fracture heals enough to move, exercise restores the movement, strength and confidence lost during immobilisation. The programme depends on the bone, the treatment (cast or surgery) and what your doctor allows.
What it does
Immobilisation causes stiffness and muscle loss. Exercise reverses these as healing allows.
Our physiotherapists use it most often for wrist fracture, ankle fracture and hip fracture, and it features in our post-surgical rehabilitation programmes.
How to do it
- While in a cast: move the joints that are free, such as fingers or toes.
- After cast removal: gentle range of motion for the affected joint.
- Weight bearing as allowed by your doctor.
- Strengthening once movement returns.
- Functional and balance training to finish.
How much
Early stage: short sessions several times a day. Later stages: daily programmes.
Stop and check with us if
- Pain suddenly increases, a deformity appears, or swelling, colour change and numbness develop.
