Physiotherapy After Discectomy in Indirapuram

A discectomy removes the part of a disc pressing on a nerve. Leg pain often improves quickly afterwards. Back strength and confidence take longer, and that's where rehabilitation earns its place.

What to expect after surgery

Many patients wake up with noticeably less leg pain. Numbness and weakness may take longer, weeks to months, because nerves recover slowly. Some back soreness from the incision and muscle retraction is expected.

Walking is encouraged from the first day. Short, frequent walks are better than long, occasional ones. Most surgeons ask you to avoid heavy lifting and prolonged sitting for the first few weeks.

Why rehab still matters

Surgery removed the piece of disc that was pressing on the nerve. It didn't change the reasons that disc was vulnerable, and it didn't rebuild the strength lost during the weeks or months of pain beforehand. The remaining disc is also still healing.

A structured programme typically starts two to six weeks after surgery. It includes gentle nerve mobility exercises for leg symptoms, trunk endurance, hip strengthening and a graded return to bending and lifting. Research generally supports active rehabilitation after lumbar disc surgery for better function and earlier return to work.

Reducing the risk of recurrence

Recurrent herniation at the same level happens in a minority of people. Nobody can eliminate that risk, but a stronger trunk and hips, sensible load progression and good lifting habits reduce the chances of a flare. We work on the actual tasks your life involves, whether that's lifting a toddler or long drives to Gurgaon.

Exercises often used for Discectomy

These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

When can I return to office work?
Desk work often resumes in two to four weeks. Heavier work may take eight to twelve weeks.
Is sitting dangerous after discectomy?
Long periods of sitting increase disc pressure. Break sitting up every 20 to 30 minutes in the early weeks.
What if leg pain comes back?
Mild fluctuations happen. Sudden severe pain, new weakness or bladder changes need urgent review with your surgeon.
