Balance and Mobility Exercises

Step Training

Step training practises quick, controlled steps forwards, sideways and backwards. It improves the protective stepping reaction that stops a trip turning into a fall.

What it does

When balance is disturbed, a well timed step saves you. Practising steps in all directions trains that reaction.

It is a regular part of rehab plans for Parkinson's disease, stroke and osteoporosis, and it features in our geriatric physiotherapy programmes.

How to do it

  1. Stand next to a counter.
  2. Step forward with one foot and return. Repeat with the other.
  3. Step to the side, then backwards.
  4. Progress to faster steps, or stepping to targets on the floor.
  5. Advanced: step onto and off a low step.

How much

10 steps in each direction with each leg, once a day.
