Balance and Mobility Exercises
Tandem Walking
Tandem walking places one foot directly in front of the other, heel touching toe, as if walking a tightrope. Tandem standing holds the same position still. Both narrow your base of support, which challenges balance and is a standard part of fall prevention and neurological rehab.
What it does
A narrow stance forces the ankles, hips and trunk to make small corrections, and relies on vision, inner ear and joint sensors working together.
You will often see it in our programmes for Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis and stroke, and it features in our geriatric physiotherapy programmes.
How to do it
- Tandem stand: stand next to a counter and place one foot directly in front of the other, heel touching toe. Hold 30 seconds, then swap feet.
- Tandem walk: walk along a counter or hallway, placing heel to toe with each step.
- Look ahead, not at your feet, once steady.
- Progress: hands off the support, then walking backwards heel to toe.
How much
Tandem stand 3 holds of 30 seconds. Tandem walk 3 to 4 lengths of 3 to 5 metres, once a day.
Common mistakes
- Looking down constantly.
- Rushing.
Stop and check with us if
- You feel dizzy or unsafe. Always practise with support within reach.
