Genu Varum (Bow Legs) Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
Genu varum means bow legs: the knees stay apart when the ankles are together. In toddlers it's common and usually corrects itself. In adults, it's often linked with inner knee arthritis.
In children
Babies and toddlers are normally bow-legged, and legs typically straighten around 18 months to two years. Bow legs that persist beyond about two to three years, are severe, only on one side or getting worse, need assessment.
Rickets from vitamin D deficiency remains a relevant cause in India, particularly in children who get little sun exposure or have limited dietary intake. Blount's disease, a growth disorder of the shin bone, is another cause.
In adults
Bow legs place more load on the inner part of the knee. That's why adults with genu varum are more likely to develop osteoarthritis in the inner knee compartment. Sometimes arthritis itself makes a knee more bowed over time as cartilage wears on one side.
What physiotherapy can do
For adults, strengthening the quadriceps, hips and core improves how the knee handles load. Gait retraining, footwear advice and sometimes an unloader brace may help reduce inner knee pain. Exercise doesn't straighten the legs, but it can make a real difference to pain and function.
For children, physiotherapy supports medical treatment when a cause is identified, and helps with strength and walking if needed.
Exercises often used for Genu Varum (Bow Legs)
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
