Spine, Back and Neck
Physiotherapy After Spinal Fusion Surgery in Indirapuram
Spinal fusion joins two or more vertebrae so they heal into one solid segment. The surgery stabilises the spine. Rehabilitation is what gets you back to walking, working and moving without fear.
The first weeks
Most people are walking within a day or two of surgery. That's intentional; early walking reduces clot risk, helps the lungs and speeds recovery. The first six weeks usually involve avoiding heavy lifting, bending and twisting, and learning how to get in and out of bed with a log roll.
Bone fusion takes months, often three to six or longer. During that time the hardware holds things together while the bone grows. Your surgeon's instructions on restrictions come first, and we follow them closely.
Phased rehabilitation
Once your surgeon clears you for outpatient rehab, usually around four to eight weeks, the work shifts toward rebuilding. The muscles around the spine have been cut or retracted and they've been inactive. They need patient, progressive loading.
We start with walking programmes, gentle trunk activation and hip mobility. Over the following months we progress to strength training, lifting technique and endurance for your job or activities. People often underestimate how much the hips and upper back need to compensate for the fused segment, so those areas get attention too.
Common problems we address
Stiffness, fear of bending, persistent muscle ache and reduced stamina are normal after fusion. So is frustration when progress plateaus. Clear milestones help. Pain that's getting worse, new leg symptoms, fever or wound problems need to go back to the surgeon.
- Walking tolerance from minutes to an hour or more
- Safe bending and lifting as fusion consolidates
- Return to desk work, driving and later heavier tasks
- Long-term exercise habit to protect the levels above and below
Exercises often used for Spinal Fusion
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
