Median Nerve Glides

Median nerve glides move the arm, wrist and fingers in a sequence that lets the median nerve slide gently through the tissues around it. They are used for carpal tunnel syndrome and median nerve irritation.

What it does

Nerves need to move freely as limbs move. Gentle gliding may reduce nerve sensitivity and improve symptoms.

Our physiotherapists use it most often for carpal tunnel syndrome, median nerve injury and cervical spondylosis, and it features in our neck pain physiotherapy programmes.

How to do it

Start with a fist, wrist straight and elbow bent, hand near the shoulder.
Straighten the fingers and thumb.
Bend the wrist back.
Turn the palm up.
Gently move the thumb out to the side.
Hold each stage for 2 seconds, then return to start.

How much

5 repetitions, 2 to 3 times a day. It should feel mild, never painful.

Common mistakes

Stretching into strong tingling. Glides should be gentle.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between gliding and stretching a nerve?

Gliding moves the nerve without putting it under tension. Stretching nerves can irritate them.

Should I feel tingling?

Mild, brief tingling can occur. It should settle quickly.
