Neurological Rehabilitation Exercises
Functional Movement Training
Functional movement training practises the actual tasks a person needs: rolling in bed, sitting up, dressing, reaching into cupboards, turning while walking. It is how physical recovery turns into independence at home.
What it does
Task-specific practice produces better gains in those tasks than general exercise alone.
It is a regular part of rehab plans for stroke, Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis, and it features in our neuro physiotherapy programmes.
How to do it
- Identify priority tasks with the person and family.
- Break each into steps, e.g. rolling, pushing up, swinging legs off the bed.
- Practise each step, then the whole task.
- Adjust the environment: bed height, rails, furniture layout.
- Repeat daily in the real setting.
How much
Daily, built into routine care.
Stop and check with us if
- A task causes pain or falls.
Medical note
These instructions are general guidance, not a personal prescription. If you have a recent injury or surgery, a diagnosed condition, or symptoms such as numbness, weakness or dizziness, get assessed before starting. Stop and seek advice if pain increases sharply or you feel unwell.
