Ganglion Cyst Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
A ganglion cyst is a smooth, fluid-filled lump that forms near a joint or tendon, most often on the back of the wrist. It's harmless in most cases. Physiotherapy doesn't remove the cyst, but it can help with the stiffness and discomfort it sometimes causes.
What a ganglion is
Ganglions arise from the lining of a joint or tendon sheath and fill with thick fluid. They can change size, sometimes getting bigger with activity and smaller with rest. Common sites are the back of the wrist, the palm side of the wrist, the base of a finger and the top of the foot.
They're more common in women and younger adults. Most aren't painful, though some press on nerves or tendons nearby and cause aching, tingling or weakness.
Treatment options
Many ganglions disappear on their own over time, so watching and waiting is a reasonable approach if it isn't bothering you. Old remedies like hitting it with a heavy book are not recommended; they can injure the wrist and the cyst often comes back.
If it's painful or limiting, a doctor may drain it with a needle (aspiration) or remove it surgically. Recurrence is possible after both.
Where physiotherapy helps
We can't dissolve or massage away a ganglion. What we can do is help if it's causing wrist stiffness, weakness or pain with certain movements, by working on range of motion and strength and advising on activity. After surgical removal, rehabilitation helps restore wrist movement, manage the scar and rebuild grip.
A lump that's hard, growing quickly, or painful without an obvious reason should be assessed by a doctor to confirm it's a ganglion.
Exercises often used for Ganglion Cyst
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
