Hip and Pelvis
Physiotherapy After Total Hip Replacement in Indirapuram
A total hip replacement removes a painful arthritic joint and replaces it with an artificial one. Most people walk the day after surgery. Getting back to confident, limp-free walking takes structured rehab over the following months.
The first six weeks
Early rehab focuses on walking with a frame or crutches, getting in and out of bed and the car safely, and managing stairs. Depending on the surgical approach, your surgeon may give movement precautions for a period, such as avoiding bending the hip beyond 90 degrees or crossing your legs. These reduce dislocation risk while tissues heal. Not every surgeon uses the same precautions, so we follow the instructions you were given.
Swelling, bruising down the thigh and tiredness are all normal. So is some night discomfort.
Rebuilding strength
The muscles on the side of the hip, the gluteus medius in particular, are key to walking without a limp. They've often been weak for years because arthritis made walking painful. After surgery, pain from the arthritis is gone, but the weakness remains until it's trained.
We progress from bed and standing exercises to step-ups, sit-to-stands, side-lying work and balance training. Walking aids are reduced as strength and balance allow, typically from frame to crutches to a single stick over several weeks.
Home visits
Many patients in Indirapuram, Vaishali and Noida prefer to start rehab at home in the first weeks. We check the home setup (chair height, toilet height, bed, stairs, loose rugs) as well as progressing exercise. Practising on your own stairs is more useful than on clinic steps.
Longer-term goals
Most people walk without aids by six to twelve weeks. Strength and confidence keep improving for up to a year. Low-impact activities like walking, cycling and swimming are encouraged long term.
Exercises often used for Total Hip Replacement
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
