Temporomandibular Joint Disorder / TMJ Physiotherapy in Indirapuram

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders cause pain in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles, clicking, limited opening and sometimes headaches. Most cases improve with simple self-care and targeted physiotherapy.

Common causes

Clenching or grinding teeth, especially at night or during stress, overloads jaw muscles. Habits like chewing gum, biting nails, leaning the chin on the hand, or eating very hard foods add strain. Neck posture and stress also contribute. Sometimes the disc inside the joint shifts, causing clicking.

Symptoms

Pain in front of the ear, jaw muscle tenderness, clicking or popping, difficulty opening the mouth wide, the jaw locking, and headaches around the temples. Earache without an ear infection may come from the jaw.

Treatment

Self-care is the foundation: softer foods for a while, avoiding gum and wide yawning, resting the jaw with teeth apart and tongue resting on the roof of the mouth. Stress management helps if clenching is related.

Physiotherapy includes jaw exercises to improve control and range, soft tissue release of jaw and neck muscles, posture correction and treatment of neck stiffness that contributes. A dentist may provide a night splint for grinding.

Most people improve within weeks to a few months.
