Knee Osteoarthritis Physiotherapy in Indirapuram

Knee osteoarthritis is the most common joint problem we see in people over 50 in Indirapuram. It hurts, it stiffens and it makes stairs a chore. And the single most effective non-surgical treatment for it is getting the muscles around the knee stronger.

What the X-ray does and doesn't tell you

An X-ray shows joint space narrowing and bony spurs. It doesn't show how strong your quadriceps are, how much the knee swells after activity, or how you walk. That's partly why X-ray severity and pain severity often don't match. Some people with bone-on-bone reports walk comfortably; others with mild changes struggle.

Why the muscles matter so much

Your thigh muscles act as shock absorbers for the knee. When they weaken, which happens quickly when pain makes you move less, more load goes directly through the joint. More load means more pain, which means less activity, which means weaker muscles. Breaking that loop is the core of treatment.

Studies consistently show that exercise reduces pain and improves function in knee osteoarthritis. The effect is similar to painkillers, without the side effects.

What a programme looks like

We start with exercises you can do comfortably: straight leg raises, sit-to-stand from a raised chair, gentle step-ups. Over weeks, we add load and difficulty. Hip strength matters too, because weak hips let the knee drift inward.

Walking and cycling are encouraged within tolerance. For flares, IFT, shortwave, TENS and taping can reduce pain enough to keep exercising. Weight loss, where relevant, helps directly: every kilo lost reduces knee load several times over with each step.

When replacement enters the conversation

If pain remains severe, affects sleep and limits daily life despite good-quality conservative care, knee replacement is an effective option. Prehab before surgery speeds recovery.

Medical note

This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.

Frequently asked questions

Should I avoid stairs?
Not entirely. Using a handrail and leading with the stronger leg going up and the painful leg going down helps. Strength work makes stairs easier over time.
Is sitting cross-legged or squatting bad?
Deep flexion often aggravates arthritic knees. You don't have to stop entirely, but reduce it if it causes pain.
Do knee braces help?
Some people benefit from a soft sleeve or an unloader brace. They support exercise, not replace it.
