Shoulder and Arm
Erb's Palsy Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
Erb's palsy is weakness in a baby's arm caused by stretching of the upper nerves of the brachial plexus, usually during a difficult delivery. Many babies recover well, and early physiotherapy helps keep the arm ready for that recovery.
What happens to the nerves
The brachial plexus is a network of nerves running from the neck into the arm. In Erb's palsy the upper roots, C5 and C6, are stretched during birth, often when the baby's shoulder gets stuck behind the mother's pelvic bone. The shoulder and elbow muscles are affected most. The typical posture is the arm hanging by the side, turned inward, with the wrist bent (sometimes called a waiter's tip position).
Severity varies from a mild stretch that recovers within weeks to more serious injuries where the nerve is torn.
Why early physiotherapy matters
While nerves recover, joints and muscles that aren't moving tighten quickly, especially at the shoulder. A shoulder that's allowed to stiffen can limit function even after the nerves come back. Gentle daily range of motion prevents that.
We teach parents how to move the arm safely, how to position the baby during feeding and sleep, and how to encourage the baby to use the arm through play. Sessions are short, frequent and gentle. Babies tolerate a lot more when it feels like play.
Monitoring recovery
Progress is tracked closely in the first months. Good recovery of elbow bending by around three months is an encouraging sign. If recovery is limited, referral to a specialist brachial plexus surgeon is important, because nerve surgery works best within a certain window. We coordinate with your pediatrician on timing.
Exercises often used for Erb's Palsy
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
