Breathing and Respiratory Exercises

Chest Mobility Exercises

Chest mobility exercises combine breathing with trunk rotation, side bending and arm movements. They loosen the ribs and upper back, making breathing easier in conditions that stiffen the chest wall.

What it does

A stiff chest wall limits lung expansion. Moving the ribs and spine increases breathing capacity.

It is a regular part of rehab plans for asthma, ankylosing spondylitis and scoliosis, and it features in our upper back pain physiotherapy programmes.

How to do it

  1. Sit upright. Breathe in while lifting both arms overhead; breathe out as they lower.
  2. Side bend: breathe in as you reach one arm over your head to the side, out as you return.
  3. Rotation: arms crossed, breathe in and turn to one side, out as you return.
  4. Move slowly with breathing.

How much

10 repetitions of each, once or twice a day.

Stop and check with us if

  • Chest pain or rib pain increases.

Medical note

These instructions are general guidance, not a personal prescription. If you have a recent injury or surgery, a diagnosed condition, or symptoms such as numbness, weakness or dizziness, get assessed before starting. Stop and seek advice if pain increases sharply or you feel unwell.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this important in ankylosing spondylitis?
