Meralgia Paresthetica Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
Meralgia paresthetica is numbness, tingling or burning over the outer front of the thigh caused by compression of a sensory nerve near the hip bone. It's harmless but irritating, and it usually improves once the pressure on the nerve is reduced.
What's being compressed
The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve carries sensation from the outer thigh. It passes under or through the inguinal ligament near the front of the pelvic bone. That spot is vulnerable to pressure.
Tight trousers, heavy belts, tool belts, low-slung waistbands, weight gain, pregnancy and long periods standing or walking can all compress it. So can previous hip or abdominal surgery and diabetes.
Symptoms
Burning, tingling or numbness on the outer front of the thigh, usually on one side. Sometimes the skin feels oversensitive to clothing. Symptoms often get worse with standing or walking and ease with sitting. There's no weakness, because the nerve only carries sensation.
We check the lower back and hip to make sure the symptoms aren't coming from a nerve root in the spine.
Management
Removing the source of pressure is the most effective step: looser clothing, moving belts or bags, and managing weight where relevant. Physiotherapy can help with soft tissue work around the hip, hip flexor and pelvic posture, and gentle nerve mobility exercises. TENS may reduce discomfort.
Most people improve within weeks to months. For persistent cases, a doctor may consider injection or, rarely, surgery.

These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
