Exercise guide

Neck Exercises

Most neck pain improves with the right mix of movement, posture correction and strengthening. These are the neck exercises our physiotherapists prescribe most, from gentle mobility for a stiff morning neck to deep neck flexor training for desk workers.

How to use these exercises

Start with mobility exercises such as chin tucks and gentle rotation, done little and often. Add stretches for the upper trapezius and levator scapulae if the neck and shoulders feel tight, then build strength with isometrics and scapular retraction. Neck mobility work belongs in your workday, not just a single session.

When to see a physiotherapist first

Get assessed before starting if you have pain or numbness spreading down an arm, weakness in the hands, clumsiness or balance problems, dizziness with neck movement, or pain after a fall or accident.

Medical note

These instructions are general guidance, not a personal prescription. If you have a recent injury or surgery, a diagnosed condition, or symptoms such as numbness, weakness or dizziness, get assessed before starting. Stop and seek advice if pain increases sharply or you feel unwell.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I do neck exercises?
Short sessions 2 to 3 times a day work better than one long session.
Can exercises help cervical spondylosis?
Yes. Movement and strength usually reduce pain and stiffness even when scans show wear.
