Balance and Mobility Exercises

Transfer Training

Transfer training teaches safe ways to move between surfaces: bed to chair, chair to toilet, wheelchair to car. For people after stroke, spinal injury, surgery or with severe weakness, it is often the step that makes independence and safe caregiving possible.

What it does

Transfers combine strength, balance and technique. Learning the right method reduces effort and the risk of falls for both patient and carer.

You will often see it in our programmes for stroke, quadriplegia and motor neuron disease, and it features in our paralysis physiotherapy programmes.

How to do it

  1. Set up: place the chair at a slight angle to the bed, brakes on if a wheelchair.
  2. Shuffle forward to the edge, feet flat and slightly back.
  3. Lean forward, push through the arms and legs to stand or lift.
  4. Pivot on the feet towards the target seat.
  5. Reach back for the armrest and sit slowly.

How much

Practise the transfers you need daily, with guidance until confident.

Stop and check with us if

  • A carer is lifting most of your body weight. Equipment and technique changes may be needed.

Medical note

These instructions are general guidance, not a personal prescription. If you have a recent injury or surgery, a diagnosed condition, or symptoms such as numbness, weakness or dizziness, get assessed before starting. Stop and seek advice if pain increases sharply or you feel unwell.
