Ankle Instability Physiotherapy in Indirapuram
Chronic ankle instability is when an ankle keeps rolling or feels like it might give way, usually after one or more poorly rehabilitated sprains. It's common and very treatable, often without surgery.
Two kinds of instability
Mechanical instability is when ligaments are stretched or torn and the ankle is genuinely looser. Functional instability is when the ankle feels unstable because muscle reaction and position sense are impaired. Many people have both.
Why sprains keep happening
Each sprain reduces the ankle's ability to sense position and react quickly. Without rehab, muscles on the outer side of the lower leg are slow to respond when the ankle starts to roll. So small missteps turn into sprains.
Rehabilitation
Balance training is the heart of it: single-leg standing, progressing to unstable surfaces, eyes closed, reaching, catching and hopping. Strength work targets the peroneal muscles, calf and hip. Agility drills and sport-specific movements prepare you for real conditions.
Studies show balance training reduces repeat sprains. Taping or bracing can help during sport while rehab progresses. If significant mechanical laxity persists despite good rehab, ligament reconstruction may be considered.
Exercises often used for Ankle Instability
These are exercises our physiotherapists commonly include. Which ones suit you, how many and in what order depends on your assessment and stage of recovery.
Medical note
This page is general information, not a diagnosis. Treatment is planned after an in-person assessment by a physiotherapist, and we refer you to a doctor where symptoms need medical review first. If you have sudden weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain or severe unexplained pain, seek emergency care.
