Shoulder Exercises
Resistance Band Shoulder Exercises
Resistance bands are the most practical way to strengthen the shoulder at home. They are cheap, portable and allow gradual progression. This set covers the main movements we use once isometrics and range of motion are comfortable.
What it does
Band exercises strengthen the rotator cuff and shoulder blade muscles through range. Band tension increases as it stretches, which suits shoulder rehabilitation well.
It is a regular part of rehab plans for rotator cuff injury, shoulder impingement and shoulder dislocation, and it features in our shoulder pain physiotherapy programmes.
How to do it
- Rows: pull the band towards your ribs, squeezing the shoulder blades.
- External and internal rotation: elbow at your side, rotate outwards and inwards against the band.
- Pull-aparts: hold the band in front at shoulder height and pull the hands apart.
- Front raise: stand on the band and lift the arm forward to shoulder height.
- Scaption: stand on the band and lift the arm up and slightly out, thumb up.
How much
12 to 15 repetitions of each, 2 to 3 sets, 3 to 4 days a week. Move to a stronger band when 15 repetitions feel easy.
Common mistakes
- Letting the band snap back instead of returning slowly.
- Choosing a band too strong to control.
Stop and check with us if
- Night pain or pain at rest increases.
Medical note
