Elbow, Wrist and Hand Exercises

Grip Strengthening

Grip strengthening uses a soft ball, therapy putty or a grip trainer to rebuild squeezing strength. Grip weakens quickly after fractures, nerve injuries and elbow tendon problems, and it is needed for almost every daily task.

What it does

Grip uses forearm and hand muscles together. Regaining strength helps with carrying, opening jars and holding tools.

Our physiotherapists use it most often for wrist fracture, hand fractures and tennis elbow, and it features in our joint pain physiotherapy programmes.

How to do it

  1. Hold a soft ball or putty in your palm.
  2. Squeeze firmly with all fingers, hold 3 to 5 seconds, then relax fully.
  3. Progress to firmer putty or longer holds.
  4. Add pinch grip: squeeze the putty between thumb and each fingertip.

How much

10 to 15 squeezes, 2 to 3 sets, once or twice a day.

Common mistakes

  • Squeezing through pain, especially with tennis elbow.
  • Holding the breath.

Stop and check with us if

  • Grip is painful at the outer elbow. Start with the elbow straight and a lighter effort.

Medical note

These instructions are general guidance, not a personal prescription. If you have a recent injury or surgery, a diagnosed condition, or symptoms such as numbness, weakness or dizziness, get assessed before starting. Stop and seek advice if pain increases sharply or you feel unwell.

Frequently asked questions

What if grip hurts my elbow?
That's common in tennis elbow. We adjust the position and load.
Is a hand grip exerciser better than a ball?
Both work. Adjustable trainers make progression easier.
